Bio

Michael Hensley is an electro-pop artist who combines heavy beats and synth-laden instrumentation with a keen sense of pop songwriting structure and melody. His music contrasts the electronic with the emotional, his lyrics providing a deeper resonance for the pulsating rhythms. Michael’s influences range from ’80s mainstays Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and Madonna, to more recent electro pioneers such as Goldfrapp, Fischerspooner, Robyn, and Royksopp.

Michael is releasing a new 7-track EP, “Heart Mechanical,” on March 26, 2012, featuring the songs “Life is a Disco” and the provocative “We’re Here to Recruit Your Kids.” Michael released his first EP, “Everyone Wants to Feel Something,” in 2006, followed soon after by his full-length debut “Fire Behind Me” in 2007. He released a remix EP and music video for his single “This Machine” in 2008.

Critics have heralded Michael’s work as “a current and fresh reinterpretation of what it means to be a dance artist” (Neufutur Magazine), “electro pop with a human face” (MusicDish), and noted that he “has impressively distinguished himself from his heroes” (Edge Boston). Michael has performed at numerous clubs and venues in Boston and New York, including opening for electro-pop veterans Freezepop at Cambridge’s legendary Middle East club in 2008.

Michael, who is openly gay, grew up in Southern Maine and currently lives in Boston. He studied piano and music theory in high school before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Audio Production from Emerson College in 2003. He has also studied at the Berklee College of Music and has been writing original songs since 2001.
